The School District serves the city of Lakewood, McChord Air Force Base and Fort Lewis Army Post and is the 17th largest public
school district in Washington State. The district operates nineteen elementary schools, four middle schools, two high schools, an alternative high school and two schools at Western State Hospital.

Five elementary schools are located on Fort Lewis; two are located on McChord. Every school in the district has a school plan that guides their progress towards increasing student achievement. The district also provides a variety of special and accelerated programs. Elementary schools offer programming for highly capable students as well as gifted and self contained 4th and 5th grade classes

Advanced studies programs are available at each grade
level in all district middle school. High schools offer advanced placement
classes to 11th and 12th graders, as well as a variety of opportunities
in vocational education, visual and performing arts, JROTC, athletics
and other activities. The district's student population is representative
of the community's multicultural and socioeconomic diversity.
