Home of I Corps, the 4th ROTC Region Headquarters, Madigan
Army Medical Center, and other tenant and support units, Ft. Lewis
was recently selected by the Army’s Chief of Staff to develop his
plan for the Army’s force of the future.
Ft. Lewis is the largest employer in Pierce County with over 20,000
soldiers on the payroll. In addition, Ft. Lewis is ranked as the
fourth largest employer in the state. As an "individual city", ranking
fifth in the state, Ft. Lewis services 65,000 military dependents,
civilians and retirees. The combined payroll of the Army military,

McChord AFB

Home to the 62nd Airlift Wing and its' Air Force Reserve
counterpart, the 446th Airlift Wing, the wings work jointly
to provide airlift of troops and equipment to anywhere in the world
on short notice. Flying the base’s new C-17 "Globemaster III" and
the C-141B "Starlifter," McChord provides air movement for other
armed services during real-world and training missions. Another
important mission is providing humanitarian support for natural
or man-made disasters. McChord is also home for two other units
– Western Air Defense Sector and the 22nd Special Tactic
Squadron. WADS is an Air National Guard Unit entrusted with guarding
airspace in the western half of the U.S. The 22nd STS
is part of Air Force Special Operations Command out of Hurlburt
Field, Florida, and is comprised of highly skilled combat controllers,
pararescue-men, and support personnel who provide quick reaction
force as needed worldwide.
More than 7,900 Air Force active duty, reserve and civilian employees
at McChord earn a combined annual payroll in excess of $336 million.

Camp Murray
Headquarters to the Washington State Military Department, a state agency,
and the Washington Army and Air National Guard. Camp Murray also holds
the Washington State Emergency Operations Center. The Center coordinates
for all state responders during a disaster. The Emergency Management Division
is part of the Military Department. Over 400 military and 220 civilian
employees of the agency work at Camp Murray.
